Control Tension

Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against the walls of the arteries. One way of measuring it is placed around the forearm an inflatable rubber band connected to a reader.

This offers a reading of two values in millimeters of mercury, for example: 120/80. The first number is the systolic blood pressure, indicating pressure during the heartbeat (systole) and the second refers to diastolic blood pressure, which indicates the pressure when the heart is relaxed (diastole).

Doctors consider a patient is hypertensive when their blood pressure exceeds 140/90 index.

What causes the increase of tension?
To illustrate, suppose you want to water your garden. Open the tap or reduce the amount of water leaving the hose causes an increase in water pressure.

The same happens with our body: blood flow increase or decrease the diameter of blood vessels raises blood pressure.

What causes hypertension?

The truth is that there are many factors involved.

Factors beyond their control

Researchers have found that family history of hypertension increases the likelihood of having the disease. Statistics show more cases among identical twins than among fraternal twins. One study said they had “located the genes responsible for hypertension,” which would confirm the existence of heredity.

Furthermore, it is known that the risk of this disorder increases with age and is higher among black men.
